A Love Letter to Lake Como

As the days go by, the one constant is the breath-taking view of Lake Como, and it doesn’t get old. Every morning, every evening, we can’t get enough of looking at this amazing combination of azure blue lake and the gorgeous green of the mountains that run straight down to the water.

Sometimes I’ll walk into a room and just get stopped in my tracks by the sight.

Sure, we have fantastic lakes in the US and around the world. No question. Lakes are amazing. Anyone with a lake house, or who’s spent time lakeside knows the peace that comes with reading, taking a meal, or just gazing out and watching life on the lake.

I don’t know what it is that makes this lake stand out from all the others I’ve seen, but it’s not just me.

I googled most beautiful lakes in the world, and Lake Como topped every list. Maybe it’s the ever-changing color of the water. It’s been described as a living canvas, turning so many colors with the weather. Just scroll through this post and see the palette for yourself.

But when it’s sunny and clear, the blue is a stunning cobalt teal color.

Even with stormy grey clouds and rain, the lake remains a beautiful slate blue, with maybe hints of lavender. Crazy!

Maybe Lake Como gets the crown because of the little hamlets all along the shores; a jumble of pastel-colored buildings climbing up the mountain. Or the magnificent villas and gardens mixed in so eclectically. Ancient stone walls and stairs leading to who knows what little café or bar.

Or all the tiled roofs fitting together like puzzle pieces.

How about the romantic wooden taxi boats cutting a path from one side to the other. And of course, the mystery of whether George and Amal might show up at any moment just adds to the allure. What? You never know!

All I can say is I am not disappointed by Lake Como. Ever. Rain, shine, day or night. I don’t want to get used to seeing this lake every day. I want to be blown away every day of the three months we are here.

It reminds me that wherever we are, wherever we go, we need to be present, observant and appreciative. Whether it’s a dream come true in paradise or another day in our backyard- I hope I never take it for granted, now or ever.
